Prayer
a sanskrit verse depicting a deity named Vinayakar from my cultural lineage by a poet unknown to me
மூஷிக வாஹன, மோதக ஹஸ்த, சாமர கர்ண, விளம்பித ஸூத்ர, வாமன ரூப, மஹேஸ்வர புத்ர, விக்ந விநாயக பாத நமஸ்தே ||
mushika vāhana, módaka hastha, chāmara karña, (check if ñ is ண ) vilambitha suthra, vāmana rupa, mahéswara puthra, vigna vināyaka pāda namasthé ||
At the outset, I share, with all humility, an interpretation of the verse, derived from my personal evolution to date as a human, applying my understanding of physics of form and flow, with very little knowledge of sanskrit, inferring the meaning from its adopted usage in the dialect of the language Tamil as spoken, written and understood in the land where I was born and grew up, viz., Tamil Nadu, Baratham, prior to migrating to Australia as the wife of my husband, my reason for my every breath since my marriage, though I didn’t know it until much later. To me Vinayakar personifies the under current that assists with the removal of obstacles in our lives as long as our intensions do not contradict the flow of the cosmos as a spontaneous dispersive Omniverse[S Ramesh, 2021, ISBN978-06451052-5-4]:
Vigna Vinayakā*, as the corrector and preventer of adversities in pursuits, I worship your feet, the allusion to the feet communicating the establishment of all the attributes that you personify in my world, thus my worship of your feet implying my worship/appreciation of all the attributes you personify. In particular, I worship you as
- mushika vāhana, your sensitivity, intellect and strength in choosing a tiny mouse as your vehicle to propel your enormous form as an elephant- a seemingly impossible idea, enabled by your confidence in your sensitivity in receiving the tinies momentum imparted by the mouse, strength in restraining your lot from interfering with the transfer of the imparted momentum into gainful motion as your intellect keeps the transfer in check
- modaka hasthā, all of your intellectual capabilities other wise inaccessible to the on looker, culminate in full in your hand, ready for imparting to myself, your devotee, the hand that is like a modakam, a sweet that is made of pooranam (freshly grated coconut -a fruit second to none in its richness in taste and nutrients, its natural sweetness tastefully enhanced with a touch of jaggery and a pinch of cardamon to appease the nostrils), gently steamed in a shell of steamed rice flour, the shell hiding the pooranam from the on-looker and revealing it in all its glory to those who taste it
- chāmara karnā, you listen to every little voice of every living species and every little rustle of every inanimate matter [S Ramesh, Zero Harm, 2021, ISBN 978-06451052-2-3] with your enormous ears sifting the chafe and taking in the grains like a moram, a hand held sifter made by weaving the blades of a coconut leaves rendered firm by the application of I-am-not-sure-what and shaped like an elephant ear, used in Tamil Nadu and potentially elsewhere as well, to sift grains from chafe/impurities such as clay or small stones
- vilambitha suthra, pardon my ignorance in sanskrit, I do not know what vilambitha means, so my knowledge that suthra means rules will have to wait for another day to reach fruition
- vāma rupa, your form in its effectiveness to accomplish what you set your heart on, is not unlike that of Vāmanar, an avatharam of Vishnu who effortlessly conquered the ahangaram(arrogance that comes about in a person from imbalanced self-respect that over looks the necessity to respect the self-respect of others) of a an accomplished king second to none in his strength and valour promising sufficient space to take three steps to Vāmanar- when Vāmanar reveals himself as Vishnu, scaling the lands and skies with the first two steps, claims the head of the king(his name eludes me) for the third
- Mahéswara putra, the son of the Mahéswarar, i.e., Siva, thus imbibing all of Siva’s attributes at birth, evolving in your own right since applying those attributes
Bye for now,
Sumathy
